Patient Engagement Software
Patient engagement software is the layer of tools that handle the patient communication lifecycle — scheduling, reminders, intake, recall, reviews, and marketing — outside the EHR.
The EHR runs the clinical visit. Patient engagement software runs everything before and after: booking, confirmations, intake, follow-up, recall, review collection, satisfaction surveys, and lifecycle marketing. The category exists because most EHRs were never designed for patient-facing communication.
What it usually includes
SMS appointment reminders, online booking, intake forms, post-visit review requests, recall campaigns for lapsed patients, email newsletters, two-way patient messaging, and sometimes telehealth.
What it does not include
Clinical charting, e-prescribing, billing, or insurance claims. Those are EHR/PM territory.
How AI changes the category
Until ~2024, patient engagement was mostly template-driven (canned SMS reminders, scheduled email blasts). Modern AI patient engagement adds two-way AI conversation: the system can text back when patients reply, answer common questions, and book or reschedule autonomously.
How to evaluate vendors
Look for: (a) BAA availability, (b) integration with your EHR, (c) AI voice or text capabilities not just templates, (d) recall segmentation depth, (e) transparent pricing.
